Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) is a major event in Hinduism described in the Vishnu Purana. The story is about devas and asuras churning the ocean to obtain Amrit (nectar). Halahal is the name of a poison that was produced by the Gods and Demons churning the Ksheera Sagar to obtain Amrit. The Gods and Demons were distressed by the intense heat of the poison and finally to save the universe, Lord Shiva drank Halahal and held it in his throat. After drinking the poison his throat turned blue, due to which he also came to be known as Neelkanth, Neelkanth means one whose throat is blue.
