Vicky Kaushal Recalls Narrow Escape from Sand Mafia During ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’ Shoot
Bollywood star Vicky Kaushal recently shared a harrowing experience from his early days in the film industry when he worked as an assistant director on Anurag Kashyap’s critically acclaimed film “Gangs of Wasseypur.” During the shoot, Kaushal and the crew found themselves in a life-threatening situation involving the local sand mafia.

The incident occurred while the crew was filming scenes depicting illegal sand mining, a significant element in the movie’s storyline. Without proper permissions, the team shot real illegal sand mining activities, which attracted the attention of the local mafia. Vicky Kaushal recounted how the situation quickly escalated, leading to a confrontation where he and the crew were nearly beaten up by the mafia. Fortunately, they managed to escape unharmed, but the ordeal left a lasting impression on him.

Anurag Kashyap, the film’s director, corroborated this story during an appearance on “The Kapil Sharma Show.” He humorously noted that it was common for his crew to encounter legal troubles due to their guerrilla-style filmmaking techniques. Kashyap’s revelation highlighted the lengths to which the team went to bring authenticity to the film, even if it meant risking their safety.

Despite these challenges, “Gangs of Wasseypur” became a landmark film in Indian cinema, known for its gritty portrayal of crime in the coal mafia of Dhanbad. Vicky Kaushal‘s experience during the shoot is a testament to the unpredictable and often dangerous nature of filmmaking, especially in the early stages of an actor’s career.
