Oscar-nominated producer Alexander Rodnyansky has been sentenced by a Russian court to eight and a half years in prison for spreading fake news about Russia’s war in Ukraine.
Alexander Rodnyansky, born in Kiev, began his career at the Kievnauchfilm studio. As a director, Alexander won several awards for his documentaries. From 1990 to 1993, he worked as a producer and film director at a German television channel. According to media reports, Alexander has been found guilty of spreading fake news about Russia’s war and has been sentenced to eight and a half years in prison by a Russian court.
The lawsuit was related to Alexander Rodnyansky‘s social media posts, first in March 2022 when he criticised a Russian missile attack on a maternity hospital in Mariupol. He then spoke out about attacks by Russian forces on civilian targets in Kiev, Dnieper and Zaporozhye on 10 October 2022.
Alexander’s reaction to being sentenced
Alexander, who was born in Kiev but has spent most of his career working in Russia. Alexander fled the country shortly after the invasion of Ukraine in 2022. According to media reports, Alexander said he expected a prison sentence of eight to 10 years.
But “it’s too late to be afraid.” He also said that other writers, journalists and filmmakers in his group had already received similar punishments and that this was the only means used by the Russian authorities to intimidate and subjugate people.
