In a triumphant night at the 96th Academy Awards, Robert Downey Jr. won his first Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Louis Strauss in Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. The veteran actor’s win was due to stiff competition from Robert De Niro, Ryan Gosling and Mark Ruffalo.
Oppenheimer was hailed as a cinematic masterpiece, and RDJ’s performance not only won him an Oscar, but also a Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Supporting Actor.

In a heartfelt speech, RDJ thanked his wife, Susan Downey, for his “terrible childhood and then the academy” and acknowledged his wife’s unwavering support. He revealed a “little secret”. That is, in order to stand in front of the audience as a better man, he needed a role more than a role.
