Palash Sen discusses the pressure that young musicians experience in the industry for speaking out in an environment dominated by music labels.
Singer Palash Sen, who made waves with his independent music band Euphoria in the 2000s, says independent music is regaining popularity in the country, but many new musicians are afraid to speak truth to power. “Indeed, independent music has improved. Everyone has started talking about it. “Young musicians do not want to be slaves to the system,” says the 58-year-old.
He acknowledges that politics exist in both the music industry and society. When asked if younger artists have communicated worries with him, Sen responds, “Of sure, but they cannot speak. People are afraid. Someone in authority can turn around and remark, Tu zyada bol raha hai, tujhe kaam nahi dunga.”
Palash Sen believes that the way the music industry functions in the United States benefits musicians. “In America, the film and music industries are separate. Agar tumhe kuch karna hai, then apne business mein reh kar karo. If the film business wants your music, it will purchase it from you. It will not hire you as a slave, baith ke banao.”
The musician is about to reissue his two hit albums, Dhoom and Maeri. Palash Sen is collaborating on the tunes with a number of new musicians. “Several young artists will appear. Several musicians have already expressed interest in being a part of Euphoria’s legacy. “I have never sold out to the film industry,” says Sen.
“Even if one percent of these kids realise what I or Euphoria have done, I believe my job will be complete. “That is the best thing I can do,” Palash Sen concludes.
