When the tumultuous backdrop of Thanksgiving 1966 Baltimore, the disappearance of a young girl sets off a chain of events where the paths of two women inevitably collide. Maddie Schwartz (played by Natalie Portman), a Jewish housewife with a hidden past yearning for a new identity as an investigative journalist, and Cleo Johnson (played by Moses Ingram), a mother entangled in the political complexities of Black Baltimore while striving to support her family, find their lives unexpectedly intertwined. Initially running parallel, their stories converge tragically when Maddie becomes consumed by the mysterious circumstances surrounding Cleo’s untimely death. As tensions escalate, the ripple effects endanger those in their orbit. Directed by Alma Har’el, “Lady in the Lake” unfolds as a gripping noir thriller and a poignant narrative illustrating the sacrifices women make in pursuit of their aspirations.
