In The Durango Kid, western hero Charles Starrett adopted the on-screen persona that would enable him to successfully sustain his film career well into the 1950s. Starrett is cast as Bill Lowry, a wandering cavalier who comes to the rescue of a group of imperiled homesteaders. Aiding Lowry in his efforts to thwart the activities of the land-baron villains is a mysterious masked rider known only as The Durango Kid. In this film, the fact that Lowry and Durango are one in the same is kept secret from the audience; this “mystery” angle would be dispensed with in future installments, when Starrett’s “Durango Kid” alter ego was firmly established. An uneven effort, The Durango Kid is hampered by a few unrealistically staged fistfights between hero Starrett and heavy Kenneth MacDonald., Heroes and rustlers clash as the Durango Kid (Charles Starrett) comes to the aid of local townspeople who are being terrorized by criminals. Luana Walters. Ballard: Kenneth MacDonald. Steve: Francis Walker. Directed by Lambert Hillyer.
