The Marilyn is Monroe (Susan Griffiths) and the “me” is Robert Slatzer (Jesse Dabson), a screenwriter whose account of a romance with Monroe from 1946 to ’52 inspired this drama. Johnny Hyde: Joel Grey. Joe DiMaggio: Sal Landi. Darryl Zanuck: Sandy McPeak. Harry: Kurt Fuller. Walter Winchell: Michael Cavanaugh. Woman at Hyde’s Funeral: Terry Moore. Directed by John Patterson., Susan Griffiths stars in this insightful and intimate portrait of Marilyn Monroe during her rise to stardom and secret marriage to Bob Slatzer. A previously untold story offering a new perspective., Dramatisation of journalist Robert Slatzer’s story of his alleged love affair with Norma Jean Baker, better known as Marilyn Monroe. When Slatzer met the aspiring actress, he immediately fell in love with her, and remained close to her through her nuerous affairs with men of power. He claimed that he and Marilyn were married in Mexico, but were forced apart by the machinations of Hollywood moguls, Robert Slatzer was the young journalist who claimed he fell for actress Norma Jean Baker. Slatzer stayed with Norma Jean as she climbed Hollywood’s slippery slope, but their marriage came under threat from studio bosses., With Marilyn Monroe permanently unavailable for comment, everybody and his uncle has come out of the woodwork since 1962 claiming an intimate relationship with the legendary film star (how did she ever find the time to be a film star?) Marilyn and Me is based on the reminiscences of one Robert Slatzer, who claimed to have been secretly married to Monroe back in her Norma Jean days. Jesse Dobson manages to keep a straight face as he recites his lines as Slatzer, while Susan Griffiths is as good a Monroe impersonator as any. Better still is Joel Grey as Marilyn’s first and most influential agent Johnny Hyde, whose own close relationship with La Monroe is a bit easier to believe. Actress Terry Moore, who in the early 1950s was briefly groomed as a Monroe “substitute,” plays a bit as Johnny Hyde’s widow. Marilyn and Me is about as convincing as the Bugs Bunny cartoon What’s Opera, Doc?, and not nearly as entertaining., Susan Griffiths stars in this insightful and intimate portrait of Marilyn Monroe during her rise to stardom and secret marriage to Bob Slatzer.
