Harvey Weinstein just days after his 2020 rape conviction was overturned in New York
Disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein has been hospitalized, just days after his 2020 rape conviction was overturned in New York, his lawyer has said. Arthur Aidala said he was taken to a Manhattan hospital on Friday. He remains in prison after being convicted separately of rape in Los Angeles.

Harvey Weinstein : Mr Aidala said his client was “a bit of a train wreck health-wise”. “It seems like he needs a lot of help physically. He has a lot of problems,” he told the AP. Later, in a statement to the BBC’s US partner CBS, Mr Adalah said Harvey Weinstein was taken to hospital after the New York City Department of Corrections determined he needed “immediate medical attention”.

“Harvey is being subjected to numerous tests and is being kept for observation,” he said. A Department of Corrections spokesman said Weinstein remains in custody at Bellevue Hospital. He was moved Friday from Mohawk Correctional Facility to the Rikers Island prison complex, where he had been since 2023.

Weinstein’s lawyers previously said the onetime film producer had multiple health problems, including diabetes, sleep apnea and problems affecting his heart and eyes. In 2020, he spent five days in hospital due to cardiac problems and chest pain.

Mr Aidala said he was scheduled to meet with Weinstein on Monday before appearing in court on Wednesday, the Associated Press reported. Earlier in the week, the New York Court of Appeals overturned Weinstein’s conviction on the grounds that he did not receive a fair trial and said that prosecutors in the crucial #MeToo case had called witnesses whose allegations were not part of the charges against him.

The court said this meant he was unfairly prosecuted for past behavior and ordered a new trial. At his trial in 2020, Weinstein was convicted of sexually assaulting former production assistant Mimi Haley in 2006 and raping Jessica Mann, a former aspiring actress, in 2013. He was jailed for 23 years. Weinstein’s defense team said the sexual relationship between the film executive and his accusers was consensual.
