Highlights
What is the story about?
Written and directed by Shoojit Sircar, I Want To Talk is about a man, Arjun (played by Abhishek Bachchan), who struggles with sudden speech loss as a symptom of an actual but rare neurological disorder. The narrative explores aspects of identity, resilience, and self-actualization as he struggles with his new reality. This dramatic tale is heart-wrenching and deals with Arjun’s relationships as well as his struggle on finding his voice, literally and figuratively.
Performances
Arjun, the quintessential introvert, comes alive in Abhishek Bachchan who recedes into silence through one of his best performances yet. Vidya Balan also plays a substantial part, and Ayaan Kapoor in all probability should have committed at least three times. Neena Gupta also does good justice to approaching Arjun’s mother.
Analysis
Its direction by Shoojit Sircar is subtle with a mix of both emotional moments and comic sequences. While this screenplay captures the angst and resolve of its lead beautifully, the second half drags in terms of pace.
Music and other departments
The music supports the tone, but it is depth that comes through Ritesh Shah’s screenplay and dialogues. High quality visuals ensured by Ronnie Lahiri and Sheel Kumar.
Highlight
Abhishek‘s silent expressions and Sircar‘s storytelling stand out.
Drawback
The pacing might feel slow for viewers looking for some conventional drama.
