The linear chain of volcanoes around the Pacific Ocean is called the “Ring of Fire.” Expanding upon the theory of plate tectonics, this program uses live-action and computer-graphic images to show how plates constantly collide or pull apart, causing molten rock beneath the surface to well up from time to time, forming volcanoes. Volcano types are defined and described, and the buildup and explosion of Mt. St. Helens dramatically reveals the process in action. Volcanic activity from other parts of the globe is also shown.
