What is it really like to be homeless, hungry, hot and sweaty, nearly broke, or shivering and alone? While many of us have seen it on TV, what would it take for someone to leave his home and drive across the country to experience it first hand? Katrina Survivors Stories was an independently produced video documentary. Literally, as I was watching the news after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, I just was drawn to … well, do something. At the time I was a wedding videographer. It was at the end of my season, and I had nothing else to do. I had a van, cameras, and computers. The only thing I didn’t have was money to get from where I lived, Washington State, to the Gulf Coast area. The Gurus say that money is every where, its just a matter of attracting it! So I put up signs, printed business cards, and emailed everyone I knew. By the following morning, I had my first $20! To give my effort some credibility, I let people who donated sign my white van with Sharpie markers. Kind of like a big “Get Well Soon” card! I left home when I thought I’d have probably enough money to get “there”. I had been so busy finishing up some weddings, to get paid, and getting all my other stuff in order, I’d not really had any idea where I planned to go! I drove across the northern states, then angled down toward Memphis, TN. The rest, well, you’ll have to watch the video to see for yourself!
