This program presents an overview of green job opportunities in the building trades where there is a high demand for trained professionals, designers, and workers to help improve the efficiency of commercial and residential buildings through better design of new buildings and smart improvements to existing structures. A job in a “green” construction trade can enable a young person, with a minimal amount of training, to get a foot in the door of the new green economy. Jobs profiled in this program include: Solar Installer, Lighting Technician, Energy Auditor. Also included are interviews at the new California Academy of Sciences to illustrate some of the key innovations in green buildings developed by architects and engineers. Part of the Green Careers series that cover eight new and growing industries giving young people a behind-the-scenes look at what it’s like to work in a variety of jobs in each sector. In on-the-job profiles, we meet entrepreneurs, scientists, field biologists, engineers, managers and interns. Also included is information on the educational requirements for entering various fields. By becoming stewards of our environment, young people who choose a green career can help solve the greatest problems of our time while finding work that matches their personal interests and values.
