LECTURE 3 OF 3. Istanbul from the Ashes of Constantinople. The city never recovered from the sack of 1204. When the Ottoman Turks conquered it in 1453, it was a ghost town. But the Ottoman sultans brought the city (now Istanbul) back to being one of the premier cities of Europe.
