A Moving Monument

The history of West Virginia’s capitols is the story of a political tug of war between those who took up arms against each other during the American Civil War, when the state itself was formed. Six buildings have served as the state’s capitol, but none so grand as today’s gold-domed masterpiece designed by famed architect Cass Gilbert, who also designed the U.S. Supreme Court building.
