Black Cake is inspired by a novel written by author Charmaine Wilkerson. The story of the series revolves around a black family. And tells the past and present story of the family.
During the 1960s, the series tells the story of the Covey. She has a passion for water skiing. Her father is facing some financial issues. A middle-aged businesswoman makes an offer to her father. This offer can pay all the debts that are due to Covey’s family. The businessman wants to marry Covey, and he promises to give her father a huge amount of money. Covey’s father agrees to the deal. Covey gets forcefully married to the business. But on the night of her wedding she disappeared. Some people assume that she ran away from the wedding. Some people assume that she drowned in the water. But what really happened, nobody knows.
Years later, the series focuses on an elderly woman named Eleanor Bennett. She is a widow who died from cancer. After her death, it was revealed that Eleanor left recorded tapes for her children. She wanted to tell them about her real identity. The tapes reveal that Eleanor Bennett is Covey. And she tells her whole life journey through the tapes. She also explains the motive behind these recorded messages. What did she tell her child on those recorded tapes? How did Covey become Eleanor Bennett?
Mia Isaac is playing the character of Covey in the series. She is an upcoming actress. She is known for her roles as Aurora in Grey Matter and Wally Park in Don’t Make Me Go.
Chipo Chung is playing the character of Eleanor Bennette in the series. She is known for her performances in The Master in Into the Badlands and Annabelle Hsin in In the Loop.
Other supporting actors who are playing various roles in the series are Adrienne Warren as Benny Bennett, Ashley Thomas as Byron Bennett, Glynn Turman as Charles Mitch, Lashay Anderson as Bunny Pringle, Anthony Mark Barrow as Clarence Henry, Sonita Henry as Mabel Martin, and Simon Wan as Lin.
