History of Christianity. Lecture 24 of 30. The Church Ripped Asunder. As the Roman Church battled new “heretical” creeds, there was dispute and dissension within the ranks of the Church hierarchy. The Papacy was shuttled off to Avignon for more than six decades before the Popes returned to Rome. No sooner had the Pope returned to Rome than rival contenders to the Papal throne split the Church in the Great Schism. Meanwhile there was the threat of further dissension with the growing popularity of the reformer, Jan Hus.
