Born in communist China, Jimmy Lai was nine years old and working at a train station, carrying luggage, when he was given a chocolate bar as a tip. The boy vowed to go to Hong Kong, where the tasty treat originated. At twelve, he convinced his mother to allow him to be smuggled-alone-to Hong Kong.
