In 1822 about 60,000 Greek Christians were massacred or enslaved on the island of Chios by militant Islamic Turks of the Ottoman Empire. Many leading statesmen, like Daniel Webster, artists, like Delacroix, and poets like Lord Byron and Victor Hugo rose up in support of freedom for Greece, the Birthplace of Democracy.
