Pendleton Ward’s “Adventure Time” has become a genuine pop culture sensation in the short time since its premiere. Whether it’s saving Princess Bubblegum, defeating zombie candy, mocking the “oxy-moronic” Ice King, or rocking out with undead music wiz Marceline the Vampire Queen, with Finn and Jake it’s always “Adventure Time.”This Paley Center for Media live event looks at “Adventure Time,” the animated action-adventure series about a boy and his dog and their various escapades in a colorful fantasy kingdom.Robert Lloyd (television critic, The Los Angeles Times) moderates the following panelists: Curtis Lelash (director of comedy animation, Cartoon Network); writer/storyboard artist Kent Osborne; creative directors Nate Cash and Adam Muto; series creator/executive producer Pendleton Ward; and cast members/voice actors Olivia Olson (Marceline), Tom Kenny (Ice King), and Jeremy Shada (Finn).The panelists discuss such topics as: the show’s creative freedom and the fan reaction to “anti-social themes”; the development of the original “Adventure Time” short cartoon and how it became more “complex” as a series; giving the voice actors the opportunity to improvise.Questions from the audience then lead to a discussion of the following topics among others: fan response to the show; how popular culture influences the show’s visual design; and real-world inspirations for some of the show’s characters.
